ARABIAN HEADS!

I'd like do something fun for a change! I'm going to do almost everyone's favorite physical feature of Arabians, their heads... and I'll put a few necks in here, too. Arabian breed type is a major component of halter judging and keeping a horse looking distinctly like a member of it's breed. The beauty of the Arabian is legendary. An attractive head with "breed type"; a dish, jibbah, fine small muzzle, huge jowl, large nostril and a large, low-set eye is part of what we call "type". Arabians have other qualities that are part of "type", but this might be the best known one.

Typey Head

How's this for a typey head? Yes on the chiseled, dry face, the "dish", the tiny muzzle, the huge eye, the well-defined, large jowl. The only thing less than the epitome of type here is that his ears are a bit long for a stallion.

The area on the forehead between the eyes, or just below, is where sometimes a bulge is found in the Arabian horse. This is called "jibbah" and it has been much prized as suggesting a larger brain area. You can clearly see "jibbah" in this photograph. This horse also shows what is less desired by some in the muzzle, the slight downward tilt being called "moose-nosed". Not everyone objects to this, and in fact, some very good headed horses show this trait.

A short head next to a longer head. Many people prefer the head short for breed type, but many otherwise very breedy heads tend to be longer.

Here's another head showing some characteristics of "dryness" the veins clearly showing, the prominent bones observable. Also note the large nostrils. This stallion shows a bit of a "human eye" which is considered undesirable in American showing today. Also here, there is a nice short head, but with the somewhat "meaty" look that is the opposite of "dry". The face appears to be more fleshed out, "meatier", with the bones and veins not prominent.

A small ear on a stallion; a long ear on a mare.

Mitbah, circled in black. Mitbah is an Arabic term for the area that extends horizontally behind the head for a short distance before curving into the neck. This trait was highly prized.

Head

A desirable, large eye, and a small one.

Short Neck

Long Neck
Necks, short and long, both Arabian! Although it is frequently said that a horse can't win big in today's halter without a very long neck, at least two of our recent National Champion stallions have been on the short side.

Finally, we have some ewe necks. These necks are said to be set on "upside-down", so the curve is in the wrong direction. I was unable to easily find some Arabians in photos to illustrate this fault, so I have pressed into service a half-Arab and two different breeds.

Arabian mare

I want to end on a good note, and what better way than to put this lovely, sweet looking Arabian mare at the conclusion?
